YEAR 2015 – THE FINAL LINE OF ELIMINATION OF „POWER ISLANDS“

Public sector has to secure implementation of the most important energy infrastructure priorities which is not always secured by the market. The subject was emphasized by Commissioner for Energy G. Oettinger during a session of the Energy Council which took place on December 3.

Minister of Energy Arvydas Sekmokas stated that such position of the Commission initiates a wider discussion about partial EU support for strategically significant however commercially unprofitable infrastructure projects on EU level which is especially important to Lithuania. One of the discussed communicates – about Energy Strategy for 2011-2020 – mentions a specific date when Power Islands should leave the EU energy map. According to the minister it means a strong signal to markets, and probable significant support of the Commission to Lithuanian power and gas link projects.

„The goal in 2015 no EU state to be isolated from internal market of Europe is a clear message binding all of us. The implementation of the goal will be a clear success indicator of the European Energy Policy“, the Minister of Energy of Lithuania stated in his speech to the Energy Council.

During the Council session ministers of EU member states responsible for energy have discussed the new future Energy Strategy for 2011-2020 and the most effective ways of development of the energy infrastructure in Europe.

In the margins of the Energy Council session meetings of ministers of energy of the three Baltic States and Poland and Commissioner for Energy G.Oettinger took place during which regional partners have discussed actions to be taken seeking to implement the project of the Visaginas Nuclear Power Plant.
